Installation

Installing the Microsoft Flight Simulator MSFS2020 is relatively simple. We decided to stream the scenery via the internet, which is no problem if you have a reasonably good internet bandwidth. 

There are a few points to bear in mind when installing additional software. Initially, we deliberately decided not to install many add-ons. However, in order to be able to use ProSim, we had to install the associated ProSim MSFS2020 module. This module is available for download via ProSim System. 

The connection between ProSim and the simulator runs via SimConnect. Nevertheless, we have installed FSUIPC, as we have various additional software that requires the corresponding telemetry data. 

Parallel operation with Prepar3D on one computer is possible without any problems. 

Known issues

On the whole, the changeover went well. In our opinion, the performance is better than in P3D. In particular, we have not noticed any stutters. Nevertheless, there are a few issues that we have noticed (as of the end of December 2023):

  • Taxiing on the ground feels a bit like travelling on rails.
  • At high speeds on the ground, the rudders are very(!) sensitive.
  • The landing lights are not recognisable in ProSim.

The most annoying problem is certainly the fact that warping is slightly affected with every MSFS2020 update. The problem is quickly fixed in the rules. However difficult is that these updates are unpredictable, unavoidable and can sometimes take up to 30 minutes, depending on the internet connection. So if you were looking forward to an evening in the cockpit, you sometimes have to be a little flexible.

There are probably more things that are not quite right, but we didn't notice anything else.

Test flight

We would have expected to have to recalibrate a lot of things. But that wasn't the case. For example, all flight controls are managed via ProSim to enable a fly-by-wire system. Therefore, no axes must or may be assigned in MSFS2020.

We take advantage of the beautiful evening and fly a few laps over Hamburg. Without getting in the way of the approach vectors of Hamburg Airport, of course.
